In Conversation: Helen Child, Open Banking Excellence at Fintech Week London

Fintech Week London took place in July as the first live in-person fintech event since the pandemic. Over the course of five days, the industry’s key players came together to discuss all things fintech, from open banking to digital ID and cryptocurrency to collaboration.  During the event, The Fintech Times spoke to Helen Child, Co-founder at Open Banking Excellence about the importance of London as a hub to the fintech community and open banking.

“I personally think London is one of the best cities in the world. In terms of fintech, I think it’s vitally important. Yes, we’ve had our challenges with Brexit and passporting etc, but still, we are the beating heart of the fintech industry, you just need to look at the data to see that.”

The conversation revolved around the importance of London to the fintech community.

She said: “London is absolutely central to the fintech industry, particularly for open banking. All the policymakers and the regulators, the banks and the big techs and the fintechs that are all a part of our global community look to London as the UK was the first place in the world to create the blueprint for open banking. Of course, screen scraping was happening before, but it’s quite fascinating how the conversation naturally has flowed from open banking to open finance.”

“In terms of open banking, the eyes of the world are looking at what we do next. It’s a very exciting time. There are so many parts of the industry with a desire to collaborate and work together, and collaboration is a keyword for us at Open Banking Excellence. When we know we’ve got everybody looking at us to shape the market, I think it’s super important that we all collaborate and work together.”
