Zonal was established in 1979, when the McLean family identified the need for a solution to manage and control their hotel operations near Edinburgh. The solution was the first electronic-point-of-sale (EPoS) system on the market, invented by Zonal’s founder, the late Ralph McLean. This early EPoS system was admired by legendary brewer Scottish & Newcastle who then adopted the system across their network of pubs, providing both head office and site managers access to a wealth of information.
Ralph handed the reins over to his son, Stuart, who became CEO of Zonal in 1997. Alongside his talented team, Stuart continued to grow and transform the company into what is now: the UK’s largest hospitality technology company. They now serve more than 16,000 businesses, from small independents through to large chains such as JD Wetherspoon, Greene King, PizzaExpress, The Restaurant Group, John Lewis, Tesco and Virgin Trains.

Tandem has introduced an ‘Autosavings’ feature, designed to help users save money. Using a number of rules, the account automatically puts money aside based on the user’s spending habits.
Tandem has launched two versions of credit cards. The first, called Journey, has been launched for people with limited credit history, helping them build up their credit score. The Cashback card gave users 0.5% cashback on worldwide purchases, with an initial credit limit from £500 to £12,000. On 8 January 2020, Tandem announced it would be discontinuing its Cashback card, replacing it with the Tandem Membership. Tandem Membership launched on 9 March 2020, with any existing Cashback card holders having their accounts closed.
Tandem is creating a better bank, challenging legacy banking by building an app and products with input from their community of users. Tandem’s goal is to make money simple, help their users save, and to free up their time from financial stress.
