On this week’s episode of News & Views, The Fintech Times Podcast team speak about how impactful Apple releasing its NFC technology will be on the payments market following an investigation from the EU, Monzo launching a waitlist for ‘Monzo for Under 16s’ and Wetherspoons introducing Payit by NatWest.
You can never have too many payment options, and for the UK and Ireland-based pub and restaurant chain, Wetherspoons this definitely is the case. The Fintech Times Podcast team first speak about Wetherspoon’s latest payment method added to its app: open banking. While the team sees the perks alternative payment methods can have, they do not think it will uproot the payments experience when at the pub.
The conversation then moves on to some of the biggest news of the week: Apple’s announcement about making its NFC tech available to rivals and third-party providers. The Podcast team acknowledges how much of a market presence Apple already has and that by sharing this technology, it will unlikely be shooting itself in the foot.
Lastly, the topic of discussion turns to financial education for young Monzo customers. Polly, Tom and Francis all agree that Monzo is doing the right thing by introducing this, but debate how impactful it will be on taking customers from rivals.
